Interpharma operates as the umbrella body for Switzerland’s research-based pharmaceutical companies, coordinating industry interests and policy dialogue. Established in 1933 and anchored in Basel, Basel-Stadt, the organization has expanded from a Basel-based consortium to a federation of 24 member firms, including Roche, Novartis, Johnson & Johnson, and other multinational players. The association aims to foster an environment that supports innovation across the full cycle of pharmaceutical research, development, and production in Switzerland and beyond, and it participates in national health policy discussions, analyses, and events to that end. It places emphasis on protecting intellectual property as a prerequisite for ongoing biomedical research at both global and national levels, and it seeks to improve public understanding of new biomedical technologies while promoting ethical standards in R&D and marketing. In 2023, Interpharma released a map depicting the geographic locations of its member companies, marking a visible reach of its network.
