The Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York operates as part of the Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York, a nonprofit educational organization established in 1987 and based in New York City. It serves more than 1,400 members across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and maintains two teaching Institutes in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood and Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill, offering a substantial schedule of classes and learning opportunities. The program includes more than 110 daily classes per week, over 90 series and workshops annually, scholarships for about 20 students, and free classes for people living with HIV and breast cancer. 

The organization’s mission centers on promoting lifelong learning and practice in Iyengar Yoga, maintaining high teaching standards, and building a regional practitioner community. Iyengar Yoga, as described by the association, is accessible to people of all ages and abilities, emphasizing strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and meditation, with instruction grounded in the broader philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and delivered by rigorously trained teachers. A notable development in recent years is the Lisa Rotell Memorial Scholarship Program, launched in 2019 to assist students who cannot pay full-class fees.
