The Journal of Business, based in Spokane, Washington, is an independent publisher that concentrates on business news for the Inland Northwest. Founded in February 1986 by local entrepreneurs, it publishes bi-weekly, producing 26 issues per year with an average distribution of about 15,000 copies. In recent years it has been owned by a subsidiary of Cowles Publishing Co., which also owns The Spokesman-Review, though the two operate separately and compete in the marketplace. Each print edition includes at least one industry-focused section, featuring topics such as Real Estate & Construction, Health Care, and High Technology & Manufacturing, and the publication also bundles supplemental magazines and compendiums, including an annual Book of Lists and the Market Fact Book. The Journal has earned multiple awards for writing and design from professional organizations, and in 2020-2021 engaged in a partnership with the Downtown Spokane Partnership to produce its annual full-color magazine.
