Karakan is a not for profit organisation that custom designs its services for people who are interested in making positive changes and increasing their sense of wellbeing. Karakan specialises in supporting people who experience mental illness or a disability, or both.

We believe that all people, regardless of their experience of mental illness, disability or adversity, can recover and have a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Karakan was founded in 1972 in response to the push from the Health department to start removing people with mental illness from institutional settings into the community.   Karakan was founded to provide additional supports to these individuals as they left these institutional settings and had to re-build their lives and become valued members of the community while maintaining their own well being.

Since 1972, the Directors of Karakan have focussed on remaining a small - medium sized mental health and disability provider in order to maintain their agility and responsiveness for clients and the broader community. 

Karakan currently operates in Brisbane, Logan, the Redlands and Toowoomba - with support services soon to be provided throughout Ipswich.  

Although we have a focus on individual, person centred supports we also provide all of the following:
