KEYS is the public power utility for the Lower Florida Keys, based in Key West. It serves more than 28,000 electric customers from Key West to the Seven-Mile Bridge and is governed by a five-member Utility Board elected by residents under a 1969 enabling act. The City of Key West purchased the electric utility in 1943, and the system was renamed KEYS in 2002. Since interconnecting to the mainland grid via the TIELINE in 1987, KEYS imports nearly all of its power supply, with local generation reserved for emergencies. It participates in the Florida Municipal Power Agency’s All Requirements Project, pooling resources with other public utilities in Florida for efficiency and scale, and it is recognized by the American Public Power Association as a Reliable Public Power Provider while pursuing environmental initiatives. Recent local recognitions include awards tied to community impact, such as the Building Strong Communities and Restoring Communities awards.
