The North American facility produced abrasives, generating sandpaper scraps. In the late 1980s, Klingspor Abrasives launched an eco-friendly idea: selling 20-pound "Bargain Box" sandpaper scrap assortments. Advertised as "The Sanding Catalogue" in Popular Science and Fine Woodworking Magazine, the concept gained traction, leading to the opening of "The Woodworking Shop" in Hickory in 1991.

The business expanded quickly, establishing four North Carolina stores in Asheville, Cary, Hickory, and Winston-Salem. Known as "A Woodworker’s Dream Store," they offer over 12,000 products, including woodworking and metalworking tools, abrasives, machinery, exotic hardwoods, finishes, and safety gear from 40+ vendors like Festool, Bosch, and SawStop. A mail-order catalog and online store extended its reach nationwide. Staffed by woodworkers, Klingspor’s prioritizes customer service, offering expert advice to all skill levels. Since 2000, Klingspor’s has hosted the annual Woodworking Extravaganza in Hickory, a free event drawing thousands from nearby states. Featuring 50+ vendors, free demos, and activities like woodcarving and soap carving, it fosters a vibrant woodworking community.
