Knoxville-Knox County Planning is a government agency established in 1956 to manage comprehensive planning and the administration of zoning and land subdivision regulations for Knoxville and Knox County, with Farragut outside its scope. It prepares and adopts a general plan, reviews subdivision regulations and site plans, and develops zoning ordinances and maps for Knox County Commission and Knoxville City Council, along with a capital improvements plan for the City of Knoxville. The Planning Commission consists of 15 members appointed by the Knoxville and Knox County mayors, serving four-year terms without compensation. Staff across Planning Services, Transportation Planning, and Information Services support the commissions and collaborate with the Knox County and Knoxville Historic Zoning Commissions, while transportation work supports the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization. The commission meets monthly on the second Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Assembly Room of the City-County Building, and the agency is based in Knoxville, Tennessee; in September 2022 Jeff Welch was named executive director.
