Kootenai Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric utility based in Rathdrum, Idaho, serving its local region. It provides electric power to more than 30,000 meters and maintains about 2,300 miles of distribution lines across parts of Kootenai, Benewah, Bonner and Spokane counties. The cooperative is governed by an independent seven-member elected Board of Directors and purchases the majority of its electricity from the Bonneville Power Administration, operating as a private nonprofit owned by its members and selling power at cost. Founded in 1939, Kootenai Electric Cooperative began by serving 385 members and has since grown to be the largest electric cooperative in Idaho. It operates as a nonprofit owned by its members and relies largely on electricity purchased from the Bonneville Power Administration to supply its service area. In 2021, the cooperative hired Karen Neorr as a real estate specialist, reflecting ongoing organizational development.
