Kounkuey Design Initiative is a non-profit organization in the architecture and planning field that partners with residents of under-resourced communities to advance equity and unlock latent potential in neighborhoods and cities. It pursues this through advocacy, research, planning, and the design and construction of built works, with a focus on public-space projects. The organization is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and works with local communities to co-create environments that are low-cost yet high-impact. In 2022, KDI received the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Landscape Architecture for its public-space work, reflecting recognition of its approach to design as a tool for community development. Through these activities, KDI seeks to translate design into tangible improvements in urban life for the communities it serves.
