The Lehigh Township Police Department serves Lehigh Township, a rural area north of Allentown and west of Easton, covering about 31 square miles with roughly 11,000 residents. It was organized in 1947 by Roland Wieand, who served as its first chief, and began providing around-the-clock police services in the early 1950s. The department maintains a small staff, including about a dozen officers and one civilian employee, with roles that include a Detective and several firearms and control/defensive tactics instructors. In 2008, the department added two sergeants to its rank structure, Michael McGonigle and John Henry III, and it operates the Lehigh Township Regional DUI taskforce, a collaboration across 14 police agencies serving 17 Northampton County municipalities.
