LifeChoice is the federally designated, non-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) for six counties in Connecticut and three counties in Western Massachusetts, with a combined population of 2.3 million people. The OPO serves 23 acute care hospitals for organ, tissue donation and two organ transplant hospitals, Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. LifeChoice is a member in good standing of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and is accredited by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO). First established as a hospital based organ procurement organization (OPO) in 1971, LifeChoice became independent in 2002. Since LifeChoice was founded, thousands of families have donated organs and tissues, saving and improving the lives of many others.
