Lifeline Australia is a national charity in the mental health care sector, based in Sydney, New South Wales, operating in a context where suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15–44 and about 21,000 people are affected by suicide each year. It provides 24-hour crisis support and suicide-prevention services through multiple channels, including the Telephone Crisis Line (13 11 14), Lifeline Text (0477 13 11 14), Lifeline Chat, a Service Finder, and domestic violence response training, with Lifeline Centres nationwide. The charity was founded in 1963 by Reverend Dr Sir Alan Walker after he received a distress call from a man who later died by suicide. A recent development noted in 2026 is Lifeline WA Limited partnering with Febfast to support a campaign encouraging Australians to go alcohol-free in February to raise funds for crisis support.
