Lucy the Elephant is a historic, elephant-shaped wooden building located in Margate City, New Jersey. Built in 1881 by James Vincent de Paul Lafferty Jr., it was originally intended as a real estate office to market beachside land parcels, but it has long served as a tourist attraction. Coastal weather over the years led to deterioration, and the city condemned the structure in 1962, after which a nonprofit group named Save Lucy Committee relocated it to city-owned parkland to preserve it. Today it is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is widely regarded as America\'s Oldest Roadside Attraction. Recent developments include interior restoration work and the construction of a new welcome center to improve visitor access.
