Luminate operates as an international philanthropic organization focused on steering technology toward social justice and human rights. It was established by The Omidyar Group and aims to support a broad network—including advocates, creatives, and innovators—as well as people affected by digital harms, with emphasis on communities often marginalized in the tech space. The organization seeks to reimagine how technology serves people's needs and wellbeing, positioning itself at the intersection of technology, civil society, and philanthropy. Based in London, England, Luminate is a mid-sized foundation within the philanthropic fundraising services sector. A notable recent development is a March 2026 partnership with LEAP Africa on the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, a five-year collaborative initiative that involves multiple partners.
