WHAT IS THE SYNOD? The Metropolitan New York Synod is a regional expression of the ELCA, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or regional governing body. The ELCA has over 10,000 congregations and 65 regional synods. Our synod covers all five boroughs of New York City, all of Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. We are divided geographically into 18 conferences, each represented by a dean who serves as a liaison between the bishop’s office and the congregations in their area. WHO ARE WE? We’re Lutherans! Lutherans make up a community of faith that shares a passion for making positive changes in the world. Our faith is built around a strong belief in God as made known to us in Jesus Christ. Through worship, service, and education, we practice our faith and grow in our relationship with God.
