Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research is a research group within the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science Limited, formed by bringing together AgResearch, Plant & Food Research, and Scion. It focuses on New Zealand’s land environment and biodiversity, translating scientific work into real-world outcomes that support the growth and resilience of the bioeconomy. The organization works with a wide range of partners, including central and local government, Māori entities, the food and fibre sector, other businesses, the global research community, and community groups, to address environmental issues and opportunities. It is based in Lincoln, in the Canterbury region, and operates across seven sites that curate a substantial portion of New Zealand’s nationally significant databases and collections. In 2024, the organization collaborated with Biosecurity Queensland in Australia to release a gall fly aimed at controlling Chromolaena odorata, illustrating applied, cross-border work.
