The Marine Institute is Ireland’s national agency for marine research, technology development and innovation, focused on assessing and realising the economic potential of the country’s vast marine resources while promoting sustainable growth of the marine sector through strategic funding and essential scientific services, and safeguarding the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. Established by the 1991 Marine Institute Act, its mandate includes promoting economic development, creating employment, and protecting the marine environment. The institute is headquartered near Oranmore, Galway, with laboratories and offices in Mayo and in several fishing ports, supported by a workforce in the hundreds. Its multidisciplinary teams cover fisheries, the marine environment, aquaculture, catchment management, ocean energy, marine climate change, and related information technology and logistical support.
