McWane Science Center is a nonprofit organization in Birmingham, Alabama that combines a science center, a children's museum, a natural history museum, an aquarium, and an IMAX Dome Theater. It emerged from the merger of Red Mountain Museum and Discovery Place and opened in downtown Birmingham in 1998. The organization serves as a center for STEM education, providing museum exhibitions, on-site classrooms, and outreach programs across Alabama. Its programs target Pre-K through 12th grade students and teachers, delivered through museum experiences, on-site education spaces, and the McWane on the Move outreach across Alabama. The facility houses a natural history collection of more than 500,000 objects and specimens related to Alabama archaeology, paleontology, and zoology, and it operates as a federal and state repository to support scientific research. In 2025, the center launched a Diamondback Terrapin Nursery, with plans to expand the initiative through a partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham later that year.
