The Meat Institute is a national nonprofit trade association representing companies that process the majority of red meat and a substantial share of turkey in the United States, along with their suppliers. Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area in Arlington, Virginia, the organization tracks legislation, regulation, and media activity that affect meat and poultry and provides members with timely updates and analyses, while supporting scientific advancement through its Foundation. It conducts research through the Meat Foundation to help meat and poultry facilities improve their plants and products, and hosts meetings and educational seminars that facilitate networking and knowledge sharing. Governance consists of elected leaders, including officers and a President/CEO, along with a large Board of Directors and Executive Board, with representation from supplier and packer/processor segments; policy and advisory committees guide policy development in core areas. A notable recent development is the March 2026 release of translated versions of its Food Safety Equipment Design Principles into Portuguese and Chinese, expanding access to a key safety resource.
