The Media Institute for Social Change is a nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to support students in becoming documentary filmmakers to raise awareness about pressing environmental and societal challenges through the use of media. Primarily, we have done so by hosting a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries about social issues. Three years ago, we started hosting an increasingly popular Student Sustainability Film Festival, drawing entries from high schools and colleges across the country. To strengthen our democracy and create a robust social culture, the Media Institute prepares students to become public interest journalists and supports independent media.
