We train dogs to help the NHS and save lives Medical Detection Dogs works with the powerful scenting ability of dogs. We train them to detect the odour of diseases like cancers, Parkinson’s disease, malaria and potentially fatal bacterial infections, as well helping people with complex, life-threatening medical conditions stay safe and lead more normal, independent lives. Our Medical Alert Assistance Dogs save lives daily by alerting their human partners to an odour change which indicates an oncoming, potentially fatal medical event. Conditions W have trained dogs to alert to include Type 1 diabetes, PoTS, Addison’s disease and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. These Medical Alert Dogs give their partner the freedom and independence to live a more normal life, including returning to work or study, and help improve the mental well-being of them and their families. Our Bio Detection research has the potential to save millions of lives by identifying the odour signature of diseases including cancers, neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and bacterial infections, and helping in the development of more reliable, non-invasive early diagnosis techniques. Medical Detection Dogs’ work is much needed. One in two people born after 1960 will be affected by cancer during their lifetime, there have been few diagnostic advances for Parkinson’s disease, diabetes is on the rise and the challenges facing the NHS are well known. We are already making a huge difference to many, but we have the potential to save many thousands and transform the future detection of disease by offering a reliable, cost-effective and simple solution to early disease detection. As a charity, we rely solely upon the public’s generosity and good will. Please help us to continue with this life-changing work.
