The company was founded in 1931 by Lebanese immigrant Moses George and his sons as a small family business in Hickory. MDI celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2016. In 2020, SpiTrex Orthopedics acquired MDI, and in 2025 MDI partnered with Instacart to offer e-commerce solutions for independent grocers.
