METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, acts as the national authority for measurement standards. Based in Bern, in the Bern canton, it realises and disseminates internationally harmonised units of measurement with the necessary accuracy and oversees the deployment of measuring instruments in commerce, transport, public safety, health and the environment. Its responsibilities include enforcing metrology-related legal provisions through the cantons and authorised verification offices. Its activities are governed by the metrology law, available in German, French and Italian. METAS delivers services that support society, the economy, research and government, and it operates as a government institution with several hundred staff.
