Michigan Sugar Company, headquartered in Bay City, Michigan, operates sugarbeet processing sites in Bay City, Caro, Croswell, and Sebewaing. Founded in 1906 through the merger of six smaller sugar companies, it became a grower-owned cooperative in 2002 and merged with Monitor Sugar in 2004 to form the current organization. Each year, grower-owners plant and harvest beets across 17 to 20 Michigan counties and into Ontario, Canada, turning the crop into about 1.3 billion pounds of sugar that is marketed under the Pioneer Sugar brand and packaged for more than 20 private labels. The company is a major regional employer, supported by a substantial year-round and seasonal workforce in Bay City and surrounding counties. In December 2025, Michigan Sugar announced the closure of its Findlay, Ohio offices and a warehouse facility, citing logistical constraints such as rail service reductions and aging equipment.
