Mission Blue is a San Francisco-based organization dedicated to protecting the ocean through action and collaboration. Originating from Sylvia Earle’s TED Prize in 2009, it seeks to mobilize a global coalition to expand marine protected areas and restore ocean health. Central to its work is the identification of Hope Spots—marine regions identified for heightened protection—and the development of efforts to secure their safeguarding.

Its approach emphasizes cross-sector partnerships and international coordination to broaden protection and support marine restoration. A recent development illustrating its ongoing activity is a June 2026 partnership with MSC Cruises, which leverages the MSC Foundation’s environmental work to advance ocean-conservation initiatives.
