MEIC is a small environmental nonprofit based in Helena, Montana. Founded in 1973 by Montanans concerned about protecting and restoring the state’s natural environment, MEIC operates as an environmental watchdog through legislative lobbying and issue monitoring. It has long influenced state and federal agencies and, when necessary, pursues enforcement of environmental laws through litigation. It counts about five thousand supporters across Montana and beyond who participate as members and activists. It bases its work on constitutional rights in Montana, including the right to a clean environment, the right to participate in government operations, and the reclamation of lands disturbed by natural resource extraction. In 2024 MEIC pursued legal action against the U.S. Department of Justice over records related to Teck Resources Limited.
