Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) is a private historically Black medical school based in Atlanta, Georgia, focused on education, research, and service to improve health outcomes and expand the health professional workforce. Founded in 1975 as the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College, it became an independently chartered institution in 1981. The school emphasizes primary care and health equity, with a mission to address the needs of people of color and underserved urban and rural populations in Georgia, across the nation, and around the world. Within the higher education and medical education landscape, MSM is recognized for fulfilling a social mission that advances health equity. In 2026, the Annals of Internal Medicine named MSM the nation’s number one medical school for this social mission. That year, MSM announced a hospital development collaboration with the City of Atlanta intended to expand healthcare access in Southwest Atlanta.
