mothers2mothers (m2m) equips African women across 7 countries to be life-saving health leaders in their own communities, ensuring the families who need health care the most get it from women who know them best. m2m Mentor Mothers—African women living with HIV—are trained, paid, professional community health workers (CHWs) who bring essential, integrated primary health care to families to meet the most urgent health needs in their communities. At a time when traditional aid donors are turning their back on the African continent, proven, cost-effective, sustainable, and authentically African solutions to health challenges have never been more critical. View this page or visit our website to find out more. m2m’s proven, peer-led model is focused on ending HIV, as well as tackling related health challenges that disproportionately impact people living with HIV—such as tuberculosis, cervical cancer, diabetes, and malaria—all with the aim of building a fairer, healthier future. The employment of local women as community health workers means that we are delivering a model that prioritises health care for families who need it most, delivered by women who know them best. To amplify our impact, we also work closely with governments, multilaterals, and implementing partners to shape policies and strengthen health systems based on our 20+ years of experience. Since we began in 2001, m2m has created jobs for over 12,000 women living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and, together, they have reached more than 17 million people with critical health services and education and helped to keep alive over 3 million at-risk mothers and infants. In 2023, we virtually eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV among our enrolled clients with a 0% transmission rate for the first time—a goal that has driven our work since our creation.
