MUW is a public university in Columbus, Mississippi, founded in 1884 as the first public college for women in the United States. It opened to male students more than 30 years ago and now operates with four colleges offering more than 50 majors and concentrations. The institution is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to confer degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. MUW supports a dynamic campus life with more than 75 student organizations and serves traditional undergraduate and graduate students pursuing admission, financial aid, and academic programs. In 2026, MUW named Dr. Kim Whitehead as interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, reflecting leadership changes within the university.
