The National Black Nurses Association is a professional, non-profit body within the hospitals and health care sector that represents more than 308,000 African American nurses. Founded in 1971, its mission includes increasing the Black nursing workforce, promoting cultural competence in care, and addressing health disparities in Black communities. Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, NBNA coordinates more than 115 chapters nationwide and offers educational programs, conferences, and publications to support ongoing professional development and peer networking. The organization positions itself as a leading advocate for Black nurses and the health of Black communities, working to advance research, promote best practices, and encourage innovation through partnerships with healthcare providers, academic institutions, and industry groups. In early 2026, NBNA participated in the 38th Annual Black Nurses Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., reflecting its ongoing engagement with policymakers and health equity initiatives.
