The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is a large public research organization in Japan focused on research services and aimed at addressing societal challenges and strengthening industrial competitiveness. It is located in Higashi, Ibaraki, and employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people. As a core component of Japan's national innovation system, AIST conducts R&D and related administration across 12 research bases nationwide and collaborates with researchers, administrative staff, and partners from academia and industry. In 2023, AIST established AIST Solutions (AiSol) to manage corporate collaboration and technology transfer. The institute maintains international collaboration through MOUs with major research organizations and conducts research across domains including Energy and Environment; Life Sciences and Biotechnology; IT and Human Factors; Materials and Chemistry; Electronics and Manufacturing, as well as geoscience and metrology initiatives such as the Geological Survey of Japan and the National Metrology Institute of Japan, and operates a Global R&D Center for Quantum-AI technology.
