The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is a national training organization focused on screen-based storytelling for writers, directors, producers, and digital creators. It provides industry-informed training through partnerships with donors, businesses, and public and private organizations to help creators develop practical skills for screen production. The institute prioritizes participation from equity-deserving communities—including Black, Indigenous and people of color, women, LGBTQ2S+, people with disabilities, and those from regional or remote areas—and is headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, having been founded in 1986 in Edmonton. Since its establishment, NSI has trained more than 1,800 creators and supported over 1,900 projects. About 81% of participants identify as members of underrepresented groups, 47% identify as women, and Indigenous-led initiatives have trained more than 850 Indigenous creators over the past two decades. In March 2026 NSI partnered with New Media Manitoba to run the NSI Intro to Virtual Production - Manitoba Indigenous Lab, with training set to begin at StudioLab xR.
