The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, based in Raleigh with eight district offices across the state, provides investigative support to local law enforcement when requested by police, sheriffs, district attorneys, or judges. It has original jurisdiction in areas such as drug investigations, arson, election law violations, child sexual abuse in day care centers, environmental crimes, human trafficking, theft and misuse of state property, and computer crime investigations involving crimes against children, and it houses the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center to coordinate information sharing with other agencies and operates a Behavioral Threat Assessment unit to identify and manage persons of concern. The SBI employs a workforce of several hundred people, including non-sworn staff, with a sizeable cadre of sworn special agents. It maintains programs and units that address public safety issues, including human trafficking. In 2026, HITT Contracting began work on a new SBI headquarters campus in Raleigh, the first major redevelopment of the agency's site there in more than five decades.
