From elegant estates and country houses to farmhouses and summer cottages, Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects is known for creating houses of timeless character.

Our practice was founded by David Neumann based on a passion for classical, traditional and vernacular architecture. We opened our first office in Washington DC in 1986, followed by our office in Middleburg, Virginia in 1989.

After two decades in practice, dozens of design awards, and wide publication, our firm has achieved a national reputation. Yet our practice has remained small by preference to allow the partners to work closely with clients in shaping their visions of home.

We design homes to become a treasured part of a family legacy. While our designs draw upon principals of design and craft from historic and vernacular precedent, we strive for both creativity and authenticity in our use of the vocabulary of traditional architecture. Our homes incorporate interior layouts that suit the way people live today, with artfully integrated technology and conveniences. 

Simplicity, grace, and beauty are the hallmarks of our work. Handmade details reveal the subtle elegance of craftsmanship. We use natural building materials such as wood, clay, copper and stone to assure that our homes will withstand the passage of time graciously.

The partners consider the firm’s most successful projects those where no distinctive architect’s signature is visible – the home that “looks like it has always been there.”
