The Nevada Department of Education is a state government agency responsible for governing P-12 public education in Nevada. It comprises the State Board, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, roughly 170 employees, and more than a dozen statutorily created committees, councils, and commissions. The Superintendent, as the department's executive head, collaborates with the State Board to develop regulations and policies that guide educator licensure, adoption of academic content standards, school performance reporting, and the administration of federal and state appropriations.

The department directly and indirectly influences the educational opportunities of nearly half a million school-aged children and about 30,000 adults pursuing high school equivalency. It operates in coordination with local school districts, the State Public Charter School Authority, the Nevada System of Higher Education, and Regional Professional Development Programs. Under an Executive Order issued in 2013, the department shares responsibility for early childhood education with the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, covering about 180,000 children aged 0 to 4.
