The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, based in Newark, grew from a 1986 plan to provide the state with a world-class performing arts venue and to serve as a catalyst for revitalizing Downtown Newark. Since its 1997 opening, it has presented more than 500 events each season across on- and off-campus spaces, drawing a diverse audience to the center's 2,800-seat main hall. The organization also functions as a broadcasting venue for major networks such as HBO, PBS, and NBC. Its Arts Education Department is one of the largest in the country, engaging about 80,000 public school students annually through in-school programs, conservatory activities, and on-stage experiences. Beyond performances, NJPAC hosts forums and public programming that address community issues and reflect Newark's cultural renaissance. In April 2026, NJPAC partnered with Project For Empty Space to commission 13 artists or artist collectives from New Jersey and New York to create site-specific works for installation on the redeveloped Newark campus by 2027.
