The New York State Senate is the upper chamber of the New York State Legislature and currently comprises 63 members. It is responsible for considering and passing legislation and constitutional amendments, and it has the authority to confirm or reject gubernatorial nominations for certain state and judicial offices. The chamber can also sit as a court of impeachment and may convene in extraordinary sessions to carry out these constitutional functions; its presiding officer is the Lieutenant Governor, who has only a casting vote, while the Majority Leader serves as the Temporary President when necessary. The Senate is based in Albany, New York, and constitutes a sizable government body with thousands of staff members. In October 2025, it launched the Fair Play Act, reflecting ongoing policy initiatives pursued by the chamber.
