North Cascades Institute is a mid-sized organization based in Sedro Woolley, Washington, founded in 1986, focused on environmental education and stewardship through hands-on experiences in the Pacific Northwest. It connects people with the region’s natural and cultural history by offering programs at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake, inside North Cascades National Park, led by naturalists, scientists, artists and writers. The programs span topics from birds and watercolor to mushrooms and photography and are designed for participants of all ages to experience mountains, rivers, forests and wildlife with the aim of fostering care for the landscape. The Learning Center provides accommodations and meals prepared with local, organic ingredients in a lakeside dining hall, along with naturalist-led activities in the Diablo Lake area. In 2024, the institute announced a partnership with the National Park Foundation, reflecting ongoing collaboration with federal and regional partners around its campus operations, which are conducted in partnership with the National Park Service and the City of Seattle.
