The Northeast-Midwest Institute is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization based in Washington, DC, with a small footprint in the think-tank landscape. Founded in the mid-1970s, it pursues a mission to promote economic vitality, environmental quality, and regional equity across 18 states in the Northeast and Midwest. The organization conducts research and analysis, develops policy ideas, evaluates federal programs, disseminates information, and highlights sound economic and environmental practices, working with public officials and community leaders and coordinating with its sister coalitions to address regional challenges. Its work spans issue-based programs on topics such as contaminated sites, water pollution, and urban sprawl, alongside place-based initiatives focused on critical resources like the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay. Positioned as a policy-focused research entity within the think-tank ecosystem, it translates findings into policy options and examinations of federal programs for regional stakeholders. In July 2021, the institute launched the Great Lakes Legislative Tracker to identify key Great Lakes legislation in the 117th Congress and monitor its progress.
