The Office of the Attorney General of Iowa serves as the state's chief legal officer, directing the legal affairs of Iowa's government. It provides legal advice and representation to most major state departments, boards, commissions, authorities, officials, and institutions, and represents Iowa in administrative matters and in state and federal courts. Located in Des Moines, the office is a mid-sized state agency elected to four-year terms. 

Its legal staff supply day-to-day counsel to state officials and agencies, guiding, mediating, negotiating, and drafting legal documents, and performing a broad range of services to support government operations. Beyond serving state government, the office acts as an advocate for Iowa residents in areas such as criminal prosecutions, consumer protection, fraud prevention, combating corruption, and civil rights protection. In December 2023, the office launched an Organized Retail Crime Unit.
