Created in 1987 by the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1986, it prosecutes indictable offences on behalf of the people of NSW and handles appeals arising from those prosecutions in Local, District, and Supreme Courts. It operates independently and impartially, making prosecution decisions free from inappropriate influence; it does not conduct crime investigations, a role assigned to investigative agencies such as the NSW Police Force.
