The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is the independent prosecuting authority for New South Wales. Created in 1987 by the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1986, it prosecutes indictable offences on behalf of the people of NSW and handles appeals arising from those prosecutions in Local, District, and Supreme Courts. It operates independently and impartially, making prosecution decisions free from inappropriate influence; it does not conduct crime investigations, a role assigned to investigative agencies such as the NSW Police Force.

In addition, the ODPP runs a Witness Assistance Service to provide information, support and assistance to victims and witnesses in matters it prosecutes. It is based in Sydney, New South Wales, and maintains an office at 252 Pitt Street Level 6.
