The Oklahoma Senate is the upper chamber of Oklahoma's Legislature and consists of 48 senators, as set by the state constitution. It approves or rejects gubernatorial appointments and contributes to the creation of state laws and the annual budget. The body also handles redistricting every ten years and serves as a court of impeachment, with the Lieutenant Governor serving as President of the Senate. Since the 1960s, the President Pro Tempore has presided over daily work, and the President of the Senate may cast a vote only to break a tie.
