ONS is the Brazilian authority responsible for coordinating and controlling the operation of generation and transmission facilities within the National Interconnected System (SIN) and for planning the operation of the country’s isolated power systems, under the oversight of Aneel. Formed as a private-law nonprofit civil association, it was established in 1998 by law, with subsequent changes enacted in 2004 and regulation issued that year. The organization is built around two membership categories—associated and participating—comprising generation, transmission, and distribution companies, free energy consumers, and importers/exporters, with participation also from the Ministry of Mines and Energy and consumer council representatives. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, it operates within the electric power transmission, control, and distribution sector as a central coordinating body for the SIN and the operation of isolated systems. It has engaged in international forums, including attendance at COP30 in November 2024, where its CEO participated in debates as part of GO15 activities.
