Open Door has clinical operations in two communities, Aurora (2nd largest city in Illinois) and Elgin (8th largest city in Illinois), both located in Kane County. Established in 1977, Open Door has a rich history of improving the public health of underserved and uninsured individuals by conducting outreach, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STI), and providing comprehensive primary care services to HIV infected individuals. Open Door’s mission is to improve & promote sexual health & wellness in the Fox River Valley by providing education, prevention, screening, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. Current HIV services cover a comprehensive range of issues. HIV counseling and testing services are completely confidential and Open Door offers anonymous pre- and post-test counseling to assist patients dealing with the issues surrounding the decision to test and the impact of knowing their status. Prevention programs focus on helping HIV negative individuals stay healthy while also dealing with the emotional impact that HIV has on self, family, friends, and community. Other programs assist HIV-positive clients, their loved ones, and caregivers to deal with the medical, emotional, social, financial, and legal aspects of HIV and AIDS.
