Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that supports at-risk youth and job seekers by offering employment and training, academic reinforcement, life skills development, job placement, and related support services. Founded in 1983 by Sister Mary Franciscus, RSM, the organization developed innovative approaches to workforce readiness and established programs that expanded to include adult job training and daytime and evening literacy classes. To reach additional communities, OBT opened a second full-service site in 2001 (OBT North) to serve residents of Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Williamsburg. The organization's mission is to help disadvantaged populations recognize their self-worth and move toward self-sufficiency and financial security through a structured mix of training, preparation for work, and continuing support. A notable recent development is a 2014 collaboration with the YMCA of Greater New York to launch the Y Roads program, which expands access to OBT's services.
