The Orange County Sheriff's Department is a large law enforcement agency serving Orange County, California. It operates through five major functional areas organized into twenty divisions, encompassing patrol and public protection, jail operations, and technical services such as investigations, coroner and forensics, emergency management, and centralized countywide communications, in addition to administrative support. In its public protection role, the department patrols unincorporated areas and provides security for the courts and John Wayne Airport, as well as homeland security and emergency communications. The department is headquartered in Santa Ana, California, at 550 North Flower, and it collaborates with twelve contract cities that rely on its police services. Its client base includes residents in patrolled areas and several county agencies for which it provides security services, including the Orange County Superior Court, John Wayne Airport, the Orange County Transportation Authority, the Social Services Agency, and the Health Care Agency. Public-safety indicators indicate a high level of resident perceived safety within patrolled areas, which are among the safest in the state relative to population size and service levels. In February 2023, the department announced an internal promotion to police chief leadership.
