Oregon Wild is a small nonprofit based in Portland, Oregon, focused on protecting and restoring Oregon’s wildlands, wildlife, and waters. Founded in 1974 (originally as the Oregon Natural Resources Council), it has helped secure permanent protections for major landscapes, including nearly 1.7 million acres of Wilderness, 95,000 acres of forests in the Bull Run/Little Sandy watersheds to safeguard Portland’s drinking water, and about 1,800 miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers. The organization also contributed to nationwide protections for roadless areas across U.S. national forests. Its programs target wilderness preservation, old-growth forest, and clean rivers and watersheds, supporting recreation opportunities and habitat; the work is driven by a grassroots network and a staff of about a dozen. Oregon Wild relies on a broad community of supporters, including thousands of members, email activists, and volunteers, to advance its campaigns. In March 2026, the organization filed a legal challenge against the Bureau of Land Management over a forest management plan near Camas Valley, illustrating its active use of litigation to protect forests.
