Background: 
Pathogens continue to rampage global health, causing more than fifteen million deaths and producing a significant economic loss. These infections take many forms, from the mild and debilitating common cold, which kills millions of people every year, to the violently fatal hemorrhagic fevers caused by the Ebola virus, which has a 90% lethality rate in humans. Outbreaks of SARS, H1N5 avian, and H1N1 pandemic influenzas have demonstrated that we remain unprepared to respond to the impact of emerging pathogens. The contagiousness and virulence of more than eighty other microbes have raised concerns about the possibility of their intentional use to harm humans, livestock, and crops. These problems are complicated, and the increasing levels of drug resistance show no signs of abating.

1) Address the increasing demand for new surveillance and detection devices that are capable of recognizing known and unknown pathogens.
2) Develop a new generation of antimicrobials (small molecules and biologicals) to inhibit infections. 
3) Produce a new generation of rationally designed vaccines.
