Outdoor Afro is a national not-for-profit organization that celebrates and inspires Black connections and leadership in nature. It began as a kitchen-table blog founded by Rue Mapp in 2009 and has since grown into a nationwide movement with more than 100 volunteer leaders across up to 60 cities. Its participation network reaches about 60,000 people through outdoor education, recreation, and conservation initiatives. It is based in Oakland, California. A recent development includes the launch of a mobile app in 2026 aimed at strengthening Black community ties around outdoor activity. The organization remains focused on expanding access to outdoor education and experiences within the civic and social sector.
